Spiti , Kaza is the headquarters of Spiti sub division. Meaning of name
Spiti is middle region, Spiti is in middle of Tibet & India, When you

face, Spiti is known as cold desert
where it never rains, But Spiti has its own beauty like narrow valleys

How to Reach Kaza:
Bhunter ( Kullu) is the nearest airport to reach Kaza, Bhunter is 250
kms away from Kaza, One can reach Kaza by road from Shimla ( May to
October), distance is 450 Kms and from Manali via Kunjum pass ( June to
October) distance is 200 Kms.
Climate of Kaza:
As we said earlier Kaza is known as cold dessert and does not receive
rain fall, In winters temperature drops below freezing point and heavy
woolens are required, In summers weather is pleasant and light woolens
are required.

TABO: Tabo is located at height of 3050 mtrs ( 10065 Ft ) above sea
level. Tabo is located on left bank of river Spiti and flanked on either
sides by hills, Tabo has one of the most important Buddhist monasteries
regarded by many as only next to the Tholing Gompa in Tibet. Tabo is
also known as Ajanta of the Himalayas.
KAZA: Kaza is located at height of
3600mtrs ( 11880 Ft) Above Sea Level. Kaza is situated at a distance of
211 Km from Kalpa and 48 km from Tabo. Kaza is The headquarters of Spiti
sub-district, Kaza is located on the bank of river Spiti. In earlier
days, Kaza was the capital of Nono, the Chief of Spiti. Kaza has a
Buddhist Monastery and Hindu Temple.
KEY GOMPA: Key Gompa is located at height of 4116 mtrs (13583 Ft ) Above
Sea Level, Key Gompa is 7 km from Kaza. Key Gompa is the largest
monastery in Spiti Valley. Key Gompa was sstablished in the 11th century
and has ancient Buddhist scrolls and paintings. Key Gompa also houses large number of Buddhist
monks and nuns.
KIBBER: is located at height of 4205 mtrs ( 13876 Ft) Above Sea
Level. Kibber is situated at 18 Kms away from Kaza, Kibber is the highest village in the world which
is connected by motor able road and Kibber is the highest habitated village in
the world which has its own polling station during elections.
DHANKAR: Dhankar is located at height of 3890 Mtrs ( 12837 Ft) Above Sea
Level, Dhankar is situated 24 km from Tabo, Dhankar is famous for a Buddhist
monastery.
PIN VALLEY: Pin Valley is know as land of snow leaopards and land of
Ibex , Pin valley lies below the Kungri Glacier.
KUNZAM PASS: Kunzam Pass is located at height of 4551Mtrs ( 15018 Feet)
Above Sea Level It is situated 80 Kms from Kaza. Kunzam Pass is
one of the highest motor able pass, People belive that Goddess Kunjum
keeps guard over this pass.
CHANDER TAL LAKE: Chandertal lake is located at height of 4270 Mtrs (
14091 Ft.) Above Sea Level, Chander Tal is situated 7 km from Kunzam Pass,
Chandertal Lake is one of the most
beautiful lakes in the entire Himalayan region. Chandertal lake is surrounded by snow
and has
deep blue water , Chandertal lake has a circumferences of 2.5 km. River Chandra flows
very close to the Chandertal lake.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR INDIAN AND
FOREIGN TOURISTS
The Kinnaur and Spiti area of Himachal Pradesh has been opened to Indian
and Foreign tourists. While going via Shimla and Rampur - Kalpa, Recong
Peo and Sangla Valley can be visited by Indians and Foreigners without
any restrictions. To travel beyond Jangi in Kinnaur to Kaza in Spiti one
requires an inner line permit for foreign nationals which can be
obtained from the following offices:
District Magistrate - Shimla, Recong Peo (Kinnaur), Kullu, Keylong (Lahaul)
Sub District Magistrate (SDM) - Shimla, Rampur, Kalpa, Nichar, Keylong,
Udaipur
Additional Deputy Commissioner Office in Pooh and Kaza.
The best place to get the permit is at Rampur and Recong Peo. The office
of the SDM at Rampur is just opposite the Police Station in the main
bazaar and the office of the District Magistrate at Recong Peo is near
the bus station. The permit is free of cost and holds good for seven
days. To get a permit, one must have a letter of introduction from a
recognized travel agency, three passport size photos, and a photocopy of
the front pages of the passport. Making several copies of the permit is
suggested, as one may have to submit them at checkpoints on the way.
Foreign nationals can travel with permits in a group of four or more
persons. Foreign nationals cannot stay overnight between Jangi and Kaza.
Indian nationals do not require any permit to travel in this area
however retaining a proof of identity is suggested.
