Jodhpur is a valiant sentinel in the desert, on the eastern part of the Thar Desert
. Jodhpur has the distinction of neither being a part of the great Thar Desert nor out of
it. Jodhpur is a doorway to the amazing wonderland of sand dunes and shrubs,
rocky terrain & thorny trees of Rajasthan. Jodhpur is the home of the Rathors
- the beautiful
princely state of Rajasthan, who conqu ered
Marwar or Marudesh, land of the sand after the fall of Delhi and Kannauj.
The great city of Jodhpur was founded by Rao Jodhaji in year 1459. Fort of
Jodhpur stands on a low range of sandstone hills, approx 125m above the
surrounding plains. The very clear distinction between the old Jodhpur and the new
Jodhpur city
is visible from the ramparts of the old fort. On the other part of the city,
facing the fort is the Umaid Bhawan Palace now known as Hotel Umaid Bhawan
Palace, one of the most spacious,
sprawling and well-planned accommodation palaces in India. And from Umaid
Bhawan Palace , as you look at the fort, a amazing view rises before your eyes at sunset.
