Sight Seeing Places near Mcleodganj
Mcleodganj is located at height of 1700
mtrs (5610 Ft) Above Sea Level , Mcleodganj is 9 km up from Kotwali Bazar
of Dharamsala , Mcleodganj is a
famous town and always called as "Little Lhasa".
Mcleodganj is the residence of H H the Dalai Lama. The
Tibetan Government in exile has been at Mcleodganj for almost
four decades. The impressive monastery at Mcleodganj has larger than
life images of the Buddha, Padmasambhava and
Avalokteshwara. A large Tibetan community resides at
Mcleodganj, The
presence of traditional architectural designs drawn
from Tibet have enhanced the charm of the Mcleodganj area. A
variety of Tibetan handicrafts and garments are available.
Tsuglag Khang (Central
Cathedral) :- TCentral Cathedral is situated opposite the residence of His
Holiness the Dalai Lama, Central Cathedral is known as Tsuglag Khang
and known to the local Indians as the Main Temple.
Tsuglag Khang houses three main
images: First Sakyamuni Buddha, Second Padmasambhava
and Third Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion, of whom
the Dalai Lama is the current emanation. The principal
image at Tsuglag Khang is that of Sakyamuni Buddha, measuring three
meters high and made of gilded bronze. To its right
there are the images of Padmasambhava and Avalokitesvara
Both images are facing towards Tibet.
Church Of St. John In The
Wilderness :- After walk of 15 Mins one can reach Anglican
church , whic lies in the forest near Forsyth Gunj.
Chruch of St John is made of
neo-Gothic stone , This Church was built in year 1852
and has some fine Belgian stained-glass windows. St
John's Chruch was miraculously
survived the 1905 earthquake - only the spire
collapsed. A memorial to Viceroy Lord Elgin stands in the
churchyard. The British Viceroy died in Dharamsala and
is buried here. Visiting hours for the church and
cemetery are 10 am to 5 pm each day.
Dal Lake :- Dal lake of Mcleodganj is located
approx three kilometers from McLeod Gunj and next to
the Tibetan Children's Village, Dal lake is small lake
and has brownish colour and not nearly as impressive as the
name and reputation suggest. However, there are many
interesting walks around the lake.
Dharamkot :- Dharamkot village is located
at twenty minutes' walk further up the hill
from McLeod Gunj, Dharamkot is a favorite picnic spot with a
panoramic view of the Kangra Valley. Dharamkot is possible to
rent houses from local Indians if you are planning for a
longish stay.
Bhagsunag :- Bhagsunag is an ancient temple of
lord Shiva, This ancient temple is 2 kms from Mcleodganj.
Close to Bhagsunag temple there is a beautiful
waterfall.
Triund:-
Triund Trek is world famous , Triund trek is 9 kms
trek and starts from
Mcleodganj to Triund i, Triund Trek is a 9 km gradual trek which
passes through the Dharmkot and Rakkar villages. The
trekking routes from Rawa, Dallake, Dharamkot and Bhagsu
meet near a ridge known as Galu Devi located at
height of 2130 mtrs ( 7029 Ft) Above Sea Level, Galu
Devi has a
small temple and a water point. Triund Trek is smooth
and clear from Galu Devi, Trek ascends through a
mixed forest of oaks and rhododendrons. Then Triund
Trek
gradually gains height and winds round the ridges
looking towards Dharamshala and the Kangra valley. The
last climb of Triund trek comes after a snow nullah
which rises abruptly with steep ascents and the
track weaves through twenty two curves making the
ascent tiring and difficult. On Triund trek one can spot many types of birds. Monals are in
plenty. Wild animals like The black bear, leopards, pigs and wild goats
are also found in this region. For accommodation
purpose at Triund ,There is a small forest
bungalow located on a big and green
subsidiary ridge of the Dhauladhar range.
Norbulingka
:-
The Norbulingka is a famous
Institute of Tibetan Culture was founded by the
Department of Religion and Culture to preserve and
promote Tibetan art and culture in exile. Norbulingka
Institute in Dharamshala has taken the initiative to
preserve the roots of Tibetan culture in exile. The
institute is sited in a beautiful valley below Dharamshala.
Chinmaya Tapovan:- Chinmaya Tapovan is An ashram complex
which has been established by late Swami Chinmayananda
who was a noted exponent of the Gita, Chinmaya
Tapovan is situated at a
distance of approximately 10 km from Dharamsala on the
banks of the rivulet Bindu Saras. The Chinmaya Tapovan complex includes
a 9 mtrs high image of Lord Hanuman, a magnificent
temple of Lord Rama, A meditation hall, a school, and a health and
recreation centre is also situated near Chinmaya
Tapovan.
Kangra :- Kangra town is located at a distance
of 18 km from Dharamshala town. Kangra was the
first seat of Raja Sansar Chand II (1775-1823) .Kangra
was
the ancient capital of powerful hill state-fort of
Nagarkot which is located 3 kms from Kangra.
Jwalamukhi :- Jwalamukhi Devi is located at
height of 600 Mtrs ( 1980 Ft) Above Sea Level ,
Jwalamukhi is situated 56 km from Dharamsala town ,
Jwalamukhi is the famous temple of goddess
Jawalamukhi who is also called as “Flaming Goddess” .
Jwalamukhi temple lies in the valley of Beas and built over some natural jets of combustible gas
, It is believed to be a manifestation of the goddess Devi
Bhagwati . There is the Gorakh Dibbi, Chaturbhuj
Temple and a host of other smaller shrine at
Jawalamukhi town.
Masrur:-
Masrur is located a t height of
800 Mtrs ( 2640 Ft) Above Sea Level, Masrur is
located at 36 kms from Dharamsala on Nagrota
Surian link road , Masrur is famous for remarkable group of
rock cut temples. There is a group of 15 monolithic
rock cut temples , made in the Indo Aryan style and
all temples are
richly carved. The main shrine contains three stone
images of Lord Ram laxman and Sita but Figure of Lord
Shiva is present in temple that gives
strong presumption that the Masrur temple was originally
dedicated to Lord Mahadeva.
